PLA Storage Guidelines

General Storage Principles

  • Store PLA products in cool, dry, and well-ventilated areas.
  • Keep away from direct sunlightradiant heat, and high humidity.
  • Avoid storing near windows, skylights, or near roof spaces that can become hot.
  • Rotate stock frequently (FIFO – First In, First Out) to avoid long-term exposure.

Warehouse Storage Requirements

  • Maintain a consistent temperature below 35°C - ideally between 15°C and 25°C.
  • Avoid storing PLA products near heat-generating equipment such as heaters, compressors, or ovens.
  • Use pallet racking that allows for air circulation (avoid stacking in tightly sealed zones).
  • Do not store in metal shipping containers or sheds that can overheat.
  • Use reflective or insulated packaging where needed during peak summer months.

Customer Storage Requirements (Trade or Onsite Use)

  • Store indoors in a temperature-controlled room, away from kitchens or hot service areas.
  • Avoid placing near sunny windows, glass shopfronts, or under direct lighting that generates heat.
  • If refrigeration or air conditioning is not available, limit the amount of stock held during hot seasons.
  • Keep in original packaging until ready to use, as this helps provide an extra layer of protection.

A note on PLA Products

Due to the nature of compostable materials, PLA can begin to soften, warp, or degrade if exposed to sustained temperatures above 35-40°C. Unlike conventional plastics, PLA is engineered to break down in commercial composting environments, so it must be treated with care throughout its storage and handling lifecycle.
