Unless you’ve been living under a rock… you’ve heard of the latest documentary ‘Seaspiracy’. Initiated by the British Filmmaker Ali Tabrizi, and backed by the team who created ‘Cowspiracy’ + Leonardo DiCaprio.
If you don’t have the time to watch this incredible documentary, don’t stress – we’ve summed up all the major points below!
SPOILER ALERT: The film ends with a foreseeable conclusion and suggested solution – go plant based. Don’t eat fish and boycott the fishing industry. Who’s surprised? Not us!
The documentary explores all the horrific ways we are waging war with the oceans, and enviably how we are winning but losing at the same time. Slowly we have been acknowledging the impact plastic pollution is having on the oceans, and beginning to implement change. Seaspiracy begs you to consider the other (and most damaging) reason our oceans are dying – overfishing.
The Japanese are herding in dolphins by the thousands and slaughtering them, but not all. Only a few are chosen to be sold to marine wildlife parks for entertainment, while the rest are simply killed because they are seen as ‘pests’ eating all the fish in the seas. Whaling in certain areas is still occurring, going unnoticed. Shark fining is extremely cruel, and a large industry, primarily for China (and other countries). If we lose any of the above species, the ocean will detoriate in response.
Even when these species are not specifically being hunted, they ARE being caught as bycatch – when fisheries are catching mass amounts of commercial fish (your salmon, tuna etc), dolphins, sharks, whales are being caught and ultimately killed in this process, with no guarantee that this can be avoided (regardless of if there is a ‘dolphin safe’ label) – these unfortunately are not as regulated as they claim to be.
Ali and his team travel around the world, uncovering and documenting the untold truths of the fishing industry. It’s not just the marine life being harmed. Individuals from third world nations around the world, are being severely taken advantaged of, enslaved in the industry, forced to work in terrible conditions, fearful of being killed if they speak out.
If the ocean dies, so do we. Coral are the trees of the seas, while the oxygen created from the ocean is responsible for of our total oxygen.
Shocking (& interesting!) facts from the documentary:
- Whales help fertilise Phytoplankton which creates oxygen
- The oceans absorb 4x more CO2 than the Amazon Rainforest
- Up to 85% of the worlds oxygen comes from Phytoplankton
- 700+ Dolphins are killed every year in Taiji
- The Taiji Dolphin drives are funded by the marine park entertainment industry
- The shark finning industry is a multi-billion industry
- A bowl of shark fin soup is worth $100
- Sharks kill 10 people per year, in comparison – people kill 11,000- 33,000 sharks per hour
